sports Railsplitter Upset Bid Falls Short At Tennessee, 76-67
KNOXVILLE, TN -- The LMU Railsplitters gave the Volunteers of the University of Tennessee a scare on Monday evening as they fell 76-67 in exhibition action at Thompson-Bowling Arena. This served as the final pre-season game for the Lincoln Memorial University basketball team as they will open the regular season on Friday, November 11th in Tex Turner Arena against Erskine College. The Railsplitters took an early 3-2 lead with a three-point basket by Desmond Johnson before the first media timeout. LMU was held scoreless for the next four minutes as the Volunteers used a 19-0 run to take a commanding 21-3 lead with 12:28 remaining in the half.A three-point bucket by Wally Jones broke that run and got the Railsplitters back on track. Nearing the eight minute mark, Lincoln Memorial got back on track and cut the deficit to 27-17 with a three by Jake Troyli. Another bucket by Troyli with 6:35 remaining put the Railsplitters within eight points of Tennessee. The Volunteers closed the half on a 15-7 run to take a 44-28 into the locker room. Early in the second half, the University of Tennessee asserted control as they took a 53-30 lead with a three by Trae Golden with 17:30 remaining in the game. The Railsplitters would hang around in the half as that would be the largest lead of the game established by the Volunteers. Nearing the second media timeout, LMU cut the lead to 59-45 in favor of Tennessee with a jump shot by Wally Jones. Lincoln Memorial continued to press the issue as a layup by Justin Allen got the Railsplitters within seven points at the eight minute mark. With 7:09 on the clock, Cam Carden drained a three to make it a 64-60 game. The Volunteers quickly answered by driving the score to 69-60 with a dunk by Cameron Tatum with 6:20 remaining. This would be the final deficit as the Railsplitters would be unable to mount a comback in the waning minutes.Jake Troyli was the leading performer for the Railsplitters as he recorded a game-high 25 points off the bench. Desmond Johnson notched a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds. Wally Jones added ten points as the final double-digit performer for Lincoln Memorial. The Railsplitters were impressive offensively and defensively as they shot 45.6% from the field while limiting the Volunteers to 34.4% from the field. The hype and excitement for the 2011-2012 season has gained more steam from this impressive exhibition performance for the Railsplitters. The home crowd will get their first look at the Lincoln Memorial basketball team on Friday evening as they open the season with Erskine College.
